I’ve had to move out of my house.
No, no worries. It’s not that kind of moving out. It’s more of a “I can’t get a darn thing done with dog, chicken, children, and husband around me” moving out. I need my space. I need to not have to worry that someone will interrupt me to ask (bark) for me to let them go outside. (Again, again, and again. )
Which is why when I found out that a local chocolate shop (Swans in Merrimack) had opened their upstairs as a place for people to meet and/or work, I was thrilled. How perfect was that? Chocolate, coffee, and writing – literally a match made in heaven.
I’m actually not too keen on writing at some coffee shops, there’s just a little too much activity going on. I’m not one of those people who can easily tune out other things (like the two women over in the corner who are talking about their children’s high school finals – well what do you know, my son has one of the teachers they are discussing.)
However, when I’m in a groove, like a superhero I can make everything disappear (even the cool Frank Sinatra music that is always playing here.) The shop activity is downstairs, there is nothing up here but chairs and tables. Since I’ve arrived this morning, I’ve written a post and an article. Not too shabby.
And as an added bonus? I’m sitting in an upright chair that won’t allow me to slouch. My back hasn’t felt this good after writing for a few hours in a loooong time.
As soon as I get this post up, I’ll turn to my manuscript for that last hour I plan to be here (and then it’s off to begin the eternal kid pick ups from school activities.) It will be the first time I’ve had a chance to look at that baby in weeks. (I blame the holidays and the kids all being home – won’t admit a bit to procrastination.)
I guess it’s all about finding out what works for you. I’ve considered renting a room but to be perfectly honest, it’s not in my budget. I’ve lusted for a tiny (expensive) writing cabin, heck, I’ve even considered working out in the cold pen with the chickens – nothing seemed to be doable. But because I’m a writer and because as a writer, I want to write, I had to find something.
So even though it means packing up my computer and notes, it’s still worth it, the benefits of finally finding a place where you can concentrate on your writing far outweighs any and all hassles.
And as for those few extra inches from the treats (this morning it was a cafe au lait with an oatmeal, cranberry, and white chocolate cookie) that will be on my hips by the time I finally get my manuscript finished?
Small price to pay and totally worth it.

I think I’m going to like working on this book.

Thanks for the smile today :O))
My pleasure, getting work done kind of makes me smile too.
Try Swan’s white hot chocolate … heaven!!
Okay, that will be next on my list. Thanks for the pointer. (next new chick we get? I’m passing out those chocolate cigars!)
Wendy
Near the end I’m strongly reminded of Michael Pollan’s “A Place of My Own”, sometimes just having a small niche to call your own and escape to is all you need.
Mm, chocolate.
Well I consider that a compliment of the highest order, thanks for your words and yes, mn, chocolate.
Wendy
Excellent! A new place to sneak off to with chocolate as a bonus! Thanks for sharing your secret.
I know, I debated about exposing my secret but it really is too good to keep to myself. Look forward to bumping into you there at some point.
Wendy
ooh it sounds like heaven-wish such a place would magically pop up where I live! I cannot write in coffee shops and somethimes libraries are filled with noisy people too and the home offers too much to do for procrastination, as well as a dog who wants to play, play, cuddle, play, cuddle….
I have been able to work at libraries but it seems that libraries aren’t what they used to be. SOooooooo noisy, sometimes.
This place has couches, tables, chairs and even a fireplace. It’s like writing by yourself at a comfy home (without the clutter and dust
Wendy
Thanks, I needed this today. I feel a little more inspired to find a way to get things done.
Cora,
If there’s a will (and chocolate) there’s a way.

Lovely, inspirational post. Reading about your writing spot, while begging my children for a moment of quiet, was almost like a Zen thing for me. Great job! I am very happy to have found your blog. Keep up the amazing, fun posts!
Well you can bet I’ll be back. It sort of had that “visiting grandma’s house” feel to it.
Wendy
Can relate, Wendy–I love my alone quiet time to write. Thanks for sharing your thoughts about exactly this aspect of writing. Nice to know that others feel the same way.
This writing spot almost matches the serenity of my yellow reading chair.
Wendy
Thanks. Reminds me to write wherever. I’m currently surrounded by one colleague, one grandma and three (unrelated) kids. A coffeshop is sounding wonderful
Sometimes, just stepping off to the side has tremendous benefits.
Wendy
Great idea. When life was busy here I would go to a local coffee shop and journal. My girls have their own places now, but I’ve just recently started going back to the coffee shop. I like it there, it’ a bit of a refuge. I have a spot in the corner. Again, I’m reading and journalling without distractions. I agree with the other responder, libraries are soooooo distracting! Have a wonderful week.
Thanks for your reply. When you’ve established a little nest like you have don’t you end up feeling protective about it? I cringe when I see someone putting their feet up on the coffee table that I use.
Wendy
I have three great places to write in my journal: 1) library 2) coffee shop; and 3) during boring meetings where I am not required to do anything other than be there and remain quiet!
I like your boring meeting strategy. That’s the kind of writing I like to do (once in awhile) just to keep me on my toes.
Wendy
stunnig and scintillating post
Thank you.
Wendy
Thanks! Roald Dahl wrote in a shed. Get back to it!

What I wouldn’t give for a shed of my own!
Wendy
It is good to have “a room of one’s own.”
Great post.
Carolyn
With 6 kids, it’s good to have *anything* of my own
Wendy
Nice working in a lovely environment. must be nice to meet other fellow writers.
That’s actually one of the best parts, it’s getting to be known as a writers’ hangout and I can always count on seeing at least one other writer there.
Wendy
Hopefully I shall be having an office built on the top of my home in Spain so that I can look at the mountain and sea views. It is such a nice place to work.
My writing skills are starting to get better and my concentration on my book is starting to get rekindled. As I moved over to Spain and had to sort out the house before I could sort out my writing. Ah well time will tell whether the book will be any good. Have a good day.
Boy, just reading your reply makes me smile. What beautiful stories are going to be coming from you!
Wendy
sounds like the perfect solution.
I recently wentthrough the same issue. I’m writing my first book and I was able to write the first few chapters with ease while sitting in my room at home but everything changed one the book started picking up. I had and couldn’t find a place to write. I also blame myself becaue I like to check my social networks alot so that slows me down. But I’ve finally found a good spot yesterday at my schools library on the top floor, they have these extremely small study room which I can rent for two hours with a trade off of my student I’d for the keys to the door. I’m extremely busy because college is a mess during the week but I have no school on Friday so ive made that day my writing day. Hopefully I can get a lot done and actually release my first book this year.
Also (haha) if you didn’t Get the vibe, I truly did enjoy reading your post
Thanks, I’ve actually gotten a lot written at my son’s college library but, as has been pointed out, libraries aren’t what they used to be. Kids feel free to talk and play music, it would have been nice to have a quiet room option like yours.
Wendy
I have been trying to get my autobigraphy/memories written for a couple of years now. I had the misfoturne to pick up a computer virus which wiped out all my original book, so now I have been trying to put it back together again. Which is quite a challenge in it’s self. However, I am sure I shall do it one day. It is such a venture though just trying to put the words on to paper. The memories have to be clear and concise otherwise they will not make sense – I have keep checking that i am not over stating a case. However I do enjoy writing and will soon be able just sit and dedicate a few afternoons a week to it. Having just relocated to Spain and am in the process of having stuff done to the house it has been a bit of destraction. Ah well now i SHALL have to make the effort to get it done. I am hoping it will be a book of encouragement to people.
Best of luck to you with your project, please keep us posted on its progress.
Wendy
Thank you for instilling the hope that there is peace and quiet somewhere in the universe! I guess I just haven’t found it yet………..
Sounds like you’ve found the absolute perfect haven– must keep searching for one, myself!
