Friday Fun is a group post from the writers of the NHWN blog. Each week, we’ll pose and answer a different, get-to-know-us question. We hope you’ll join in by providing your answer in the comments.
QUESTION: What song (or songs) make you smile and get you moving no matter when you hear it (them)?
Lisa J. Jackson: “Walking on Sunshine” has always always fallen into this category for me. It gets me singing and smiling and dancing (even if I’m in the car). “Call Me Maybe” is a recent favorite. I don’t know what it is about that song, but I just love it and there are so many fun lip synched plays on it on YouTube, too. It seems addictive to a lot of folks. But it makes me smile and I have to sing along whenever I hear it.
.
Julie Hennrikus: My niece got Just Dance 4 for Christmas, and this question was answered when the B-52s Rock Lobster came up. I grabbed a remote, danced my heart out, and won the round. Love Shack has the same effect. I have a playlist for exercising that includes a lot of 80′s music that gets me moving, or at least smiling.
.
Jamie Wallace: Love Lisa and Julie’s picks! The songs that get me up and groovin’ change depending on my mood, but here are a few that almost always hit the spot: Lovely Day, You Got It, Stuck Like Glue, Stitched Up, Dog Days Are Over, and this other little number (also by Florence and the Machine):
Deborah Lee Luskin: Anything by The Beatles, Johnny Cash, The Avett Brothers, Ella, Etta – the gamut. I can listen to anything to get up and move. It’s when I need to sit down and focus that I turn on Bach’s music for solo piano and solo violin.

This has been my theme song for as long as it’s been out. I find Flo to be so passionate. I love her words and hope some day I can write as well as she sings.
I’m a Blues lover primarily, but listen to the following artists regularly who can move me to move my body:
Eric Clapton, The Stones, Earth Wind & Fire, Diane Krall, Amos Lee and one of the greatest lyricists – Paul Simon, who always inspires me to reach higher in my own expression, which is a dance of the mind and the soul.
Love Shack…I don’t remember who recorded it and Freedom….George Michael.
YES – love Florence & The Machines!
I love the song “Shadows” by David Crowder with Lecrae. It’s a little slower, but to me it’s deeply inspiring.
She’s like a rainbow – Rolling Stones, reminds me of my mama who was Jenny from Forrest Gump in real life…
Shake Your Booty by KC and the Sunshine Band. If you can recall the little white cape that KC wore during performances, it makes it even better.
Party Rock Anthem by LMFAQ is absolutely bound to get you moving x in a good way x It was played at my daughter’s wedding party and to see her young friends dance to it was just so uplifting and joyous! You just have to listen to it!
“Sydney” by Brett Dennen! Can’t get enough of that song.
Most anything by Paul Thorn. The guy is a crack up.
Every time I hear “Just Like Heaven” by the Cure, I want to bounce!
Any 80′s hip hop song makes me smile and Alt rock is excellent writing music for me..
Saor Patrol. Described as ‘tribal’ pipes and drums. They are not your typical military pipe and drum band, but wild and pounding and…well, I guess tribal. They inspire me not just for writing action scenes or fast paced scenes, but just for giving me that energy and optimism to pick up the pen.
